Tonight was amazing
I spoke Italian, and I don’t even know Italian.
Tonight, my four roommates and I decided to go for a walk down the street. Three blocks later we found ourselves standing at the Trevi Fountain. I immediately ran too it, awe struck, and feeling a little silly off of the wine I bought at the supermercato early that day. We drank it out on the balcony, (straight out of the bottles since we have no wine glasses yet).
At the Trevi Fountain, I ran so fast to it, swung myself under the rod-iron railing onto the stairs and down, and sat on the edge, not minding the sprinkling of water I was sitting in. I sat there for a few minutes with my feet dangling in the water, looking up at the most beautiful fountain in the world, when I heard a whistle. I looked over my left shoulder and so some Italian police men whistling, so I took my legs out of the water, (but only after I took a photo of course!).
Then I had a go at speaking Italian to the locals, although I don’t know any. Speaking a combination of French and English, with my roommates who know a tiny but of Italian and some Spanish, we are all able to have a full, two hour conversation with the loveliest Italians. They were so patient and nice and helping. I have never spoken Italian in my life and there I was, sitting at the Trevi Fountain at one in the morning, talking, laughing, joking, and even doing card ticks with the local Italians!
Around two o’clock the Italians, as well as ourselves, were getting sleepy and decided it was time to head home. We said our caios and each departed our separate ways. In less than five minutes we were back at our amazing apartment discussing how amazing and fun our night was.
We may not speak the same language, but a smile and a good laugh are universal.
Ciao, Samantha
Ps. I got my first gelato today! Chocolate and caffé in a sugar cone 30 seconds from my apartment and ate it in front of the pantheon. Absolutely delicious!
